The Historiographer

The Historiographer publishes articles dealing with the history of congregations, dioceses, ministries, liturgy, spirituality, art and architecture, and of significant persons of the Episcopal Church; as well as the composition and preservation of congregational and diocesan historical records. Articles addressing the historical impact of social, cultural and religious issues on the Episcopal Church are also accepted.

Members of the Historical Society of the Episcopal Church, National Episcopal Historians and Archivists, and the Episcopal Women's History Project are strongly encouraged to submit for publication.
Non-member submissions for publication are welcome.
Material should be submitted at least two months in advance of publication (March, June, September, December).

Guidelines

Length depends on article type of article.

News briefs or announcements no more than 300 words
General news articles, reviews and features, between 300-1000 words
Major articles and features between 1,000-2,500 words

Article text will be edited to conform to the Associated Press Stylebook.
Sources should be cited within the article as much as practicable, and a list of sources provided with the article if warranted. The Historiographer does not publish footnotes so any information vital to the narrative should be included in the article or incorporated in the list of sources.
Citations should conform to the Chicago Manual of Style.
Images accompanying articles should be in .jpg format and between 500KB and 5MB in size depending on the image type and application. Submit images as an email attachment, NOT embedded in another document. Color images may be submitted, but may be converted to gray scale for publication.
Credit for the owner or creator of the image should be provided, and permissions and licenses obtained for all images not the property of the author or not in the public domain.

Submission

There is no guarantee that articles submitted will be published.
Articles submitted for publication are subject to editing for space and style requirements.
In submitting material for publication, the author and contributor grants to The Historiographer one time rights to publish and distribute the material in the magazine and in digital format on the websites and social media of the publishers.
All items, except Book Reviews, should be submitted to the editor at thehistoriographer@gmail.com. If submission requires mailing, contact the editor for mailing directions.

Book Review

Book Reviews are welcome. The position of Book Review Editor is currently vacant, so please submit reviews to the editor at thehistoriographer@gmail.com.
Complete bibliographic reference is required.
Reviews should provide a concise summary of the content (with relevant description of the topic as well as its overall perspective, argument, or purpose), offer a critical assessment of the content (what strikes you as noteworthy, whether or not it was effective or persuasive, and how it enhanced your understanding of the issues at hand) and suggest whether or not the audience would appreciate it.
